Effective Communications with Elected Officials & Others
Webinar Description
Bruce Anderson and a small panel of guests, including a member of Senator Mazie Hirono’s staff, discussed how Friends organizations can build relationships and create effective messages to elected officials at Federal, State and local levels. Building relationships ensures advocacy efforts are timely and impactful.
Presenters:
- Bruce Anderson, Legislation Team Friends of Hakalau Forest NWR, is a retired Director of Health for the State of Hawaii. He has interfaced with the public and government officials for most of his career.
- Peter Stine, Vice President of the Friends of Hakalau Forest Refuge has been involved in wildland conservation and management for over 40 years, from Florida, to the Pacific Northwest, Hawai’i, and California. The first half of his career was with the USFWS, including a 5 year assignment in Hawai‘i as the endangered species recovery coordinator. This work included the design and preparations for establishing Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge.
- Jen Burks,Senior Policy Advisor for U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI). Jen has served in this role for ten years, handling agriculture, natural resource, ocean, climate change, and environmental policy for the Senator. Prior to this, Jen served 8 months as a Congressional Science Policy Fellow in Senator Hirono’s office.
