DESCRIPTION:While Manawai (Pearl and Hermes Atoll) lies about 85 miles southeast of Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll)\, the two atolls share many important conservation connections. \nSpinner dolphins and Hawaiian monk seals have been known to move between the two atolls. In July 2025\, up to 100 ʻEkupuʻu (Laysan Finches) were relocated from Manawai to Kuaihelani to help safeguard the species from limited habitat\, storms\, and rising sea levels. The birds were released on Kuaihelani July 22\, 2025\, marking a now successful return to their ancestral home. Plastic pollution and other forms of marine debris also impact both Atolls and can ultimately end up harming the corals\, seabirds\, sea turtles\, and mammals that find refuge here. \nNow\, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project (PMDP) is inviting you to experience a first-of-its-kind look on Manawai—live from the field next Thursday\, September 24 from  1:00 PM – 1:45 PM PDT. \nPMDP conducts annual cleanup missions throughout Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to remove tens of thousands of pounds of marine debris\, including derelict fishing gear that can entangle and harm wildlife.
