SUMMARY:Refuge Budgets 101
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Refuge Friends webinar with Greg Knadle\, Refuge Association Board member\, for an overview of how the National Wildlife Refuge System budget and federal appropriations process work. \nThis webinar will help Friends better understand how refuge funding moves through Congress\, what key steps shape the annual budget process\, and why sustained funding is essential for national wildlife refuges\, wildlife conservation\, visitor access\, and local communities. \nGreg will draw on more than 30 years of experience working across federal wildlife\, natural resources\, and appropriations programs to help demystify the budget process and answer questions from Friends. \nPresenter: \nGreg Knadle brings over 30 years of experience in wildlife conservation\, federal policy\, and strategic advocacy to the Refuge Association Board. Her connection to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began in 2006 as a volunteer at a Service fish hatchery laboratory in Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:From Kodiak to the Aleutians: Researching Emperor Geese at the Edges of their Wintering Range
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear about these elegant\, uniquely Alaskan birds as Robyn Thomas\, wildlife biologist\, shares with us what she discovered about Emperors on their winter range. Robyn will be presenting in Fairbanks but you can zoom from anywhere with the link to be posted here closer to the time https://alaskarefugefriends.org/emperor-geese/\nAlthough much research had been done on Emperor geese nesting grounds on the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge\, almost nothing was known about what happens in winter. Unlike other geese species nesting in Alaska\, these birds also winter in Alaska and are found only in the Bering Sea region. Her hope is that winter research would shed more light on the wild population fluctuations this species has endured. Winter research on Alaska’s Coast is tough. Hear her stories and learn what she found out.\nThere will also be watch parties in Soldotna\, Homer and Anchorage REI or you can zoom from anywhere. Details\, zoom link and the recording afterwards here https://alaskarefugefriends.org/emperor-geese/

SUMMARY:Experience Manawai Live!
DESCRIPTION:While Manawai (Pearl and Hermes Atoll) lies about 85 miles southeast of Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll)\, the two atolls share many important conservation connections. \nSpinner dolphins and Hawaiian monk seals have been known to move between the two atolls. In July 2025\, up to 100 ʻEkupuʻu (Laysan Finches) were relocated from Manawai to Kuaihelani to help safeguard the species from limited habitat\, storms\, and rising sea levels. The birds were released on Kuaihelani July 22\, 2025\, marking a now successful return to their ancestral home. Plastic pollution and other forms of marine debris also impact both Atolls and can ultimately end up harming the corals\, seabirds\, sea turtles\, and mammals that find refuge here. \nNow\, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project (PMDP) is inviting you to experience a first-of-its-kind look on Manawai—live from the field next Thursday\, September 24 from  1:00 PM – 1:45 PM PDT. \nPMDP conducts annual cleanup missions throughout Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to remove tens of thousands of pounds of marine debris\, including derelict fishing gear that can entangle and harm wildlife. Earlier this spring\, their crew removed more than 50\,000 pounds of debris from Kuaihelani! \nFor the first time\, you can join the PMDP crew live on the water at Manawai as they:\n+ Explore Manawai’s remote reefs and wildlife\n+ Locate and remove ghost nets and other marine debris\n+ Demonstrate small-boat operations in the field\n+ Answer your questions during a live Q&A \nWe hope you are able to join to see conservation in action from one of the most remote places in Hawaiʻi. \nClick here to register and submit your questions for the team.\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Water for the Wild-Rebuilding the Lifelines that Sustain Our Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Bosque del Apache for a virtual presentation as we examine the important details of our Water for the Wild Campaign with Friends of Bosque del Apache staff and lead Refuge Biologist\, Claire Revekant. \nAt Bosque del Apache\, every season\, every wingbeat\, every annual migration depends on one essential truth: where water flows\, life flourishes. But in the arid Southwest\, water does not simply arrive; it must be carefully delivered and directed around the refuge through a network of gates\, channels\, and control structures — the arterial lifelines that carry this life-giving water to the wetlands. Many of these systems have worked tirelessly for decades\, but today they are aging and increasingly strained by extended drought and rising temperatures. This year\, with your support\, we’re working to strengthen these waterways and maximize every available drop — ensuring that water continues to reach the habitats that so desperately depend on it. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll take a deeper dive into the “what”\, “why”\, “where”\, and “how” of the project\, learning about the necessary repairs\, how we will achieve these needed improvements\, how this work will affect the refuge\, and why this work is so critical right now. Join us to learn more about how you can help! \nRegister Now
